    What's New in HappyTrails

We're always improving HappyTrails. Here's everything we've shipped recently to make discovering, planning, and sharing your trips even better.

    August 25, 2026

Add Places Straight to a Trip Day

    • Tap "Add a place" at the bottom of any day in your trip and Explore now remembers exactly where you were planning to add it.
    • Choose a place from the list or map, confirm the saved day, and it goes right into that day — no need to find the trip again.
    July 25, 2026

See Which Trips Are Saved for Offline

    • Trip cards now show a small "Offline" badge with the last time the trip was saved, so you can tell at a glance which trips are ready to take without a connection.
    • The badge appears right away after you use Save for offline, in both the Trips page and the Trips sidebar.

    Weather-Aware Packing Suggestions

    • When your trip dates are coming up soon, the AI packing list now checks the actual weather forecast at your destination — so rain jackets, sunscreen, or warm layers get suggested when they're really needed.
    • After generating, the packing list shows a short weather note (like "Rain expected — pack accordingly") so you know what to expect.

    Print Your Packing List

    • The packing list now has a Print button, so you can print a clean, grouped paper checklist — items you've already packed show as checked off — perfect for packing away from a screen.

Clearer Day Headers on Shared Trips

    • Shared and public trip pages now show each day's name on its own line with the date, number of places, and stay details underneath — so long day names no longer get cut off on phones.

    Day-Level Travel Summary

    • Each day in the trip planner and on shared trip pages now shows a quick travel summary: the total walking time and distance across that day's stops.
    • If a day includes a hop that's too far to walk, a "long hop" flag appears so you know to plan a taxi or transit ride for that stretch.

    Trip Map Day Filtering Fixed

    • When viewing a trip on the main map, the Day tabs now filter the markers too: pick Day 2 and you'll see only Day 2's numbered stops and its stay, matching the route shown.
    • Map pins no longer flicker while your GPS position updates — markers now stay steady as you move around.

    Transit Lines at a Glance

    • The nearest station shown next to each stop now also tells you which metro or train lines serve it — for example "Bir-Hakeim · M6 · 350 m" — so you know which line to take, not just the station name.
    July 24, 2026

    Save Trips for Offline Use

    • You can now download a trip before you leave: open the trip's menu on the My Trips list and choose "Save for offline" to store the whole itinerary — days, stops, walking times, and transit tips — on your device.
    • Saved trips stay readable without a connection, even if you haven't opened them recently, and the offline banner shows when the trip was last updated.

    Cleaner, Editable Day Headers

    • Each day's header in the trip planner has been redesigned: the stay and day hours are now shown as tappable chips right under the day name.
    • Tap the stay chip (or "Add stay") to set or change that day's hotel without opening any menus, and tap the hours chip to adjust the day's start and end times right there — changes save instantly.
    • Place cards got a cleaner redesign: a bigger photo on the left, action buttons at the top, the place name in bold on its own line below them, and the address, rating, and category condensed into one subtle line.
    • Duplicate labels are gone from place cards — the star and anchor buttons themselves now light up to show a stop is a must-see or anchored, and only genuine warnings (like "May be closed" or arriving late) appear as colored flags.
    • Getting directions is more direct: tap a stop's address to open Google Maps directions, tap the walking-distance line between two stops for directions to the next stop, and tap the nearest transit station to find it on Google Maps.
    • Long notes on a stop now collapse to a single line — tap More to read the whole note and Less to tuck it away again.
    • The Timeline view got the same tappable links: stop names open the place's guide page, addresses and walking legs open Google Maps directions, and transit stations open a Google Maps search.
    • Your hotel is now tappable: the stay shown at the start of each Timeline day and the per-day "Staying at" labels on shared and public trip pages open the hotel in Google Maps with one tap.
    • The drag handle on each place card now sits snugly in the top-left corner, making it easier to grab a stop to reorder it.

    Time-Aware Day Planning

    • Each day in your trip planner now shows an estimated timeline — how long the day's plan takes from your chosen start time — and warns you if it likely won't fit before the day ends.
    • Stops that would probably be closed when you arrive (based on their real opening hours and your day's date) now get a "May be closed" flag right on the card.
    • Set your travel hours per trip under Settings → Day hours (default 9:00–21:00), or override them for a single day when editing that day.
    • The trip optimizer is now time-aware: it avoids sending you to places while they're closed, saves restaurants for meal times, puts viewpoints and beaches near sunset, and schedules nightlife last.

    Must-See Stops and Reservation Anchors

    • Mark any stop as a must-see with the star button — when the optimizer regroups your days, must-sees are placed first and never get shuffled around just to balance the load.
    • Anchor a stop with the new anchor button to lock it to its exact spot: optimizing will reorder everything around it, and it will never be moved to another day — perfect for timed tickets and dinner reservations.
    • When a stop looks like it needs a reservation, the planner now suggests anchoring it for you — accept with one tap or dismiss the hint.
    • You can now set an arrival time on any anchored stop (like dinner at 19:30). The badge shows the time, the day's timeline warns you if the plan would arrive late, and the optimizer arranges the other stops so you get there on time.
    • The optimize preview now tells you how many stops are anchored or protected, and flags must-see places in the list of moves.
    • Optimize now has its own button right next to "View on map" in the trip planner — no more digging through the More menu.
    • Hover or long-press the star and anchor buttons on any stop for a quick explanation of what each one does.

    A Smarter Trip Optimizer

    • If your trip or day has a hotel set, optimized routes now start and end there — no more plans that leave you stranded across town at the end of the day.
    • New "Optimize for" choice: keep the classic shortest walk, or pick "Fastest overall" to plan by total travel time, where long hops are counted as public-transit rides instead of walks.
    • Regrouping places across days now balances the travel load so no single day is exhausting, and the preview shows before-and-after totals for each day.
    July 23, 2026

Day Routes Right on the Explore Map

    • Tap "View on map" in your trip planner and the main Explore map now draws that day's route — solid orange lines for walking, dashed blue for transit, dashed purple for driving — with a legend so you always know what you're seeing.
    • Pick any day of your trip with the new day chips above the map; the map zooms to that day's stops and routes automatically, and tapping a route line shows how long the leg takes.
    • The separate Route Map view inside the trip planner is gone — everything now lives on the big map, alongside your numbered stops and hotel marker.

    A Tidier Header on Desktop

    • On larger screens the header is now simpler: the separate Explore button is gone, since the Trips button already keeps you on the Explore page while toggling your trips panel.

    A Cleaner Explore Trips Directory

    • The Explore Trips page now only shows shared trips that actually have places in them, so you won't scroll past empty placeholder trips while browsing for inspiration.

Explore Trips Now Comes with Starter Itineraries

    • The Explore Trips directory now features 8 ready-made itineraries from the HappyTrails Team — including Paris, Tokyo, Rome, Yosemite, Utah's Mighty 5, Toronto, and two wine-country weekends.
    • Each one is a real, day-by-day plan with mapped stops and photos. Open any of them for inspiration, copy one into your own planner, or rate the ones you love.

    Your Plan, One Tap Away

    • There's a new Account & Billing page inside the app — tap the new account icon in the header to see your current plan at a glance, including whether your subscription bills monthly or yearly.
    • On the free plan? You'll see exactly how much of this month's allowance you've used — AI guides, itinerary drafts, and your trip slot — with handy progress bars and a quick Upgrade button.
    • Subscribers can jump straight into billing management to update their card, switch plans, view invoices, or cancel. Trip Pass holders see their pass's active-until date and an easy way to subscribe for ongoing access.

What's New, Without Leaving the App

    • Tapping the sparkles icon in the app header now opens these release notes in a pop-up right where you are — no more jumping to a separate page and losing your spot.
    • Close the pop-up and you're back exactly where you left off, whether you were exploring the map or fine-tuning a trip day.

Introducing Free, Traveler & Trip Pass Plans

    • HappyTrails now has a free plan and a premium plan. Everyone can discover places, keep one trip in the planner, and generate up to 3 AI guides and 1 AI itinerary draft each month — free forever.
    • Upgrade to Traveler ($5.99/month or $39/year) for unlimited trips, unlimited AI guides and itineraries, audio narration, route optimization, AI packing lists, and file attachments.
    • Heading out on one big adventure? A one-time Trip Pass ($9.99) unlocks everything premium for 30 days — no subscription needed.
    • See the new Pricing page for a full comparison, upgrade securely through Stripe checkout, and manage or cancel your subscription anytime from the billing portal.

Notes & Files, Together in One Place

    • Adding files to a stop is now easier on desktop: drag a file from your computer straight into the Notes & files dialog, or paste a copied image, and it uploads instantly — same as using the Add attachment button.
    • Tap a photo thumbnail in a stop's Notes & files dialog to preview it full-size right in the app — flip through all of a stop's photos with arrows or your keyboard, no new tabs needed.
    • PDF tickets and confirmations open in an in-app preview too, with a one-click option to open any file in a new tab when you need it.
    • Each stop in your trip planner now has a single Notes & files button instead of separate note and paperclip buttons — tap it to write your note and manage the stop's tickets and documents in one dialog.
    • A small counter on the button shows at a glance how much a stop holds: your note plus the number of attached files.
    • Everything else works as before — notes still show right on the stop card, and your notes and files stay private to you.
    • On your phone, swipe left or right on a photo in the preview to move between a stop's pictures — just like your camera roll.

The Route Map Now Shows Real Routes

    • Your trip's route map now traces the actual streets between stops instead of straight lines — walking legs appear as solid orange paths following real walking routes.
    • When a hop is too far to walk, the map shows the best alternative instead: a blue dashed line for public transit or a purple dashed line for a taxi/drive, with a legend explaining each line style.
    • Tap any line on the map to see how you'd get there — the travel mode, distance, and estimated time for that leg.
    • This works on your own trip planner and on shared and public trip pages alike.

    Your Trips Now Work Offline

    • No signal, no problem: any trip you've opened while online stays readable when your connection drops — perfect for the subway, a plane, or roaming abroad.
    • When you're offline, a banner at the top of the trip tells you you're viewing your saved copy and when it was last updated. Editing pauses until you're back online so nothing gets lost.
    • The moment your connection returns, everything refreshes automatically and editing switches back on — no reload needed.
    • The route map needs an internet connection, so offline it shows a friendly note instead — your list and timeline views keep working.

AI Packing Checklist for Every Trip

    • Never forget the sunscreen again: open "Packing list" from your trip's More menu and let AI draft a checklist tailored to your destination, travel dates, and the kinds of places you've planned.
    • Check items off as you pack, add your own items, and remove anything you don't need — everything is saved to your trip.
    • Plans changed? Regenerate the list anytime: your own items stay put, and anything you'd already checked off stays checked if it's still on the list.
    • Your packing list is private to you — it never appears on shared or public trip pages and isn't included when someone copies your trip.

Attach Tickets & Documents to Your Stops

    • Keep everything for a stop in one place: open the Notes & files dialog on any place in your trip planner to attach photos, tickets, booking confirmations, PDFs, or Word documents (up to 10 MB each).
    • Images show a preview thumbnail and any file opens in a new tab with one tap.
    • Attachments are private to you — they never appear on shared or public trip pages, and they aren't included when someone copies your trip.

Optimize Your Whole Trip's Walking Routes

    • Pick "Optimize trip" from your trip's More menu, choose which days to include, and HappyTrails reorders each day's stops into the shortest walking route — starting from your hotel when a day has a stay location.
    • Planning across several days? Switch to "Regroup across days" and places are also moved between the selected days so each day covers one area of the city, with a preview of exactly which places move where.
    • Before you apply anything, you'll see the total walking distance before and after, based on real walking routes whenever they're available — so you know exactly how much shoe leather you're saving.
    • Changed your mind? Hit Undo on the confirmation message to bring back your previous arrangement. Places that aren't matched to the map always stay on their original day.
    July 22, 2026

Ask the Map Anything with AI Search

    • Search the Explore map in plain language: tap the new sparkles button next to the search box and type things like "romantic dinner with a view" or "rainy afternoon with kids" — the AI figures out what to look for and finds matching places around your map area.
    • While it works you'll see what the AI understood from your request, and matching places can carry a small note explaining why they fit.
    • Regular search is untouched: leave the sparkles off and everything works exactly as before — and if AI search ever hiccups, your words are run as a normal search automatically.
    • Fixed: with AI search on, the place-name autocomplete dropdown no longer pops up while you type your request — it's back the moment you switch the sparkles off.

See Your Trip as a Timeline or Route Map

    • The trip planner now has three ways to view a trip: the familiar list, a new timeline, and a new route map. Switch anytime with the toggle at the top — your choice is remembered while you browse.
    • The timeline shows each day as a vertical journey: your hotel as the starting point, stops in order, walking times between them, and the nearest station for each place.
    • The route map draws a day's path on the map — numbered markers in visit order, your stay marked with a hotel pin, and a line connecting the stops. Pick any day to see its route.
    • Shared and public trip pages get the same timeline and route map views, so anyone you share with can explore the trip visually too.

    A Fresh New Look

    • HappyTrails has a new visual style inspired by premium travel magazines: elegant serif headings, a crisp black-and-white palette with warm amber highlights, and softer rounded corners throughout the app.
    • Everything works exactly as before — the same screens and buttons, just dressed in a more cinematic, travel-worthy outfit. Dark mode got the same refresh.
    • The refresh now reaches every last corner: map popups, the app icon on your home screen, and password-reset emails all match the new black-and-amber look instead of the old blue.
    July 21, 2026

A Different Hotel for Each Day

    • Changing hotels mid-trip? You can now set a stay location for individual days. Tap the hotel icon on any day in the trip planner to pick that day's accommodation — distances, walking times from your stay, and directions for that day all use it automatically.
    • Days without their own stay keep using the trip's main stay location, and you can switch a day back to it anytime. Shared and public trip pages show each day's stay too.
    • Fixed: saving a stay for an individual day no longer fails with an error — day stays now save reliably, and that day's distances, walking legs, and directions immediately reflect the hotel you picked.
    • Picking a stay is now faster: results appear as you type in the stay search, and a new "Stays in this trip" list lets you reuse the trip's main stay or another day's hotel with one tap.
    • Pasted itineraries now understand hotels: when you import an itinerary (including one exported with "Copy itinerary"), "Staying at" lines become your trip's stay location — and per-day hotels become that day's stay — instead of showing up as sightseeing stops. The import preview shows them with a hotel icon.
    • The "Copy itinerary" text export now includes your hotels: alongside the trip's main stay, each day with its own hotel lists it right under the day heading — in the trip planner and on shared trip pages.
    • The stay picker now highlights your current stay: when you open it for a day or for the trip, the hotel that currently applies is marked with a check and a "Current" label — with the trip's main hotel shown as the default for days without their own stay — so you can confirm or switch at a glance.

Collapsible Days in the Trip Planner

    • Fixed a frustrating freeze: after opening dialogs from a trip's menus — like Paste itinerary, Create with AI, Share, or Delete — or after importing an itinerary, the app could stop responding to taps until you reloaded. Everything now stays fully clickable.
    • Day headers in the trip planner got a cleaner layout: the day name now sits on its own line so it's never cut off on your phone, with the date, hotel, and number of places tucked neatly underneath.
    • Planning a long trip? Each day card in the trip planner can now be collapsed with the new chevron button in its header, so you can tuck away finished days and focus on the one you're working on.
    • Collapsed days still show their label, date, hotel, and how many places they hold — and opening a day link from elsewhere in the app expands it automatically.

    Search Matches the Map

    • Search now looks in the area you're viewing on the map — pan to Paris and search "cafe" to get cafes in Paris, whether you're standing there or planning from home. Famous places by name still work from anywhere.

    A Refreshed Features Page

    • The Features page now covers everything HappyTrails can do — AI itinerary creation, paste-an-itinerary import, community trips, walking times and transit info, hotel-centered planning, and installing HappyTrails on your home screen.

How It Works & Why Pages Updated

    • The How It Works page now shows all the ways to start a trip — plan by hand, let the AI draft an itinerary, or paste one in — and how to publish your trip to Explore Trips for others to copy and rate.
    • The Why HappyTrails page now highlights AI itinerary creation and the community trip library among the reasons to choose HappyTrails.

    Explore Trips from Other Travelers

    • New Explore Trips page: browse real itineraries published by other travelers — search by name or destination and sort by most copied, highest rated, shortest, longest, or newest.
    • Publish your own trip from the Share dialog in the trip planner. Choose an optional display name to appear as the author — your email is never shown — and unpublish anytime.
    • Found a trip you love? Copy it into your account with one tap and customize it as your own. Copying also works on trips shared with you by link.
    • Rate any public trip from 1 to 5 stars (sign in required, one rating per traveler, changeable anytime). Average ratings and copy counts appear on every public trip.
    • The Explore Trips page now loads trips in batches with a "Load more trips" button, so browsing stays fast no matter how many trips get published.

    Smarter AI Itineraries

    • Steer the AI itinerary with new optional controls: pick the kinds of places you want (museums, food, nature, nightlife, and more), your pace, your budget, and whether you prefer walkable days or don't mind transit.
    • Your itinerary preferences are now remembered: the next time you open the AI itinerary form, your last-used place types, pace, budget, and travel style are pre-filled for you.
    • Don't love a day in the preview? Tap "Regenerate" on just that day and the AI redrafts it — without touching the rest of your itinerary.
    • When adding an AI itinerary to an existing trip, places you've already planned are avoided automatically, and any repeats are clearly marked as "Already in trip".

    A Tidier Trip Planner

    • Places in your trips now show their star rating and category badges (like "Tourist Attraction" or "Museum") — the same helpful details you see when exploring — in the trip planner, in the trip view on the Explore map, and on shared and public trip pages.
    • Older trips catch up automatically: places saved before ratings and categories were tracked now fill in that missing info the next time you open the trip — no action needed.
    • Tap a place in your trip planner and it now opens on the Explore map, centered with its info popup ready — perfect for seeing where a stop is at a glance. Use the new blue info button next to the place's name to open its details page instead.
    • The Trips list now remembers which trip you had open: reload the page or navigate away and back, and the same trip is still expanded until you collapse it.
    • On phones, the in-app header now shows just the mountain logo instead of a squeezed "H…" — leaving more room for the search and navigation buttons. The full HappyTrails name still appears on larger screens, and page titles (like a place's name) still show everywhere.
    • The trip planner's action buttons are now organized into a clean toolbar: "View on map" stays one tap away, and everything else — Paste itinerary, Create with AI, Copy itinerary, and Walking & transit settings — lives in a single tidy "More" menu. No more piles of buttons on your phone.
    • Fixed: after tapping Search on the Explore page, the suggestion dropdown no longer pops back up over your results a moment later.
    • Your hotel on the "Staying at" card is now a link: tap it to open the hotel on Google Maps in a new tab — on your trips and on shared trip pages alike.
    • Long notes on a place no longer stretch your itinerary: they're trimmed to two lines with a "More" link to expand the full note (and "Less" to tuck it away again) — in the trip planner and on shared trips.

A Focused Trip View on the Map

    • Opening a trip in the Trips sidebar no longer redraws the map — the map only changes when you tap "View on map", so you can peek at your plans without losing your place.
    • While viewing a trip, each stop's distance is now measured from your hotel (when the trip has a stay location) instead of from wherever you happen to be, so the numbers actually help you plan.
    • Viewing a trip on the Explore map is now a dedicated trip view: a "Viewing trip" banner shows which trip you're looking at, and only that trip's numbered stops and hotel appear — no more unrelated nearby places cluttering the map or the list.
    • While viewing a trip, the side list shows your trip's stops in day order, numbered to match the map markers. Tap a stop to zoom to it on the map, or open its details page.
    • Tap Exit on the banner — or just run a new search — to return to normal exploring with nearby places.

    Explore List, Meet the Map

    • Tapping a place card on the Explore page now shows that place on the map — the map pans to it and opens its info popup. A new blue info button on each card takes you straight to the details page instead.
    • Trip stops on the Explore map now behave like regular places: tapping a numbered marker opens the familiar info popup with photo, address, and directions (no add-to-trip button since it's already in your trip) instead of jumping to the details page.
    • Trip stop cards in the list view got the same makeover — photo thumbnail, distance, a details button, and a directions link, matching the regular place cards.
    • Closing the Trips panel now fully resets the Explore page: the trip's markers disappear and the map returns to your nearby places view.

    Getting Around Made Easy

    • See real walking times between the stops in your day — e.g. "12 min walk (900 m)" — in the trip planner and on shared trips.
    • If your hotel is set, each day also shows the walking time from your stay to the first stop.
    • Longer hops are flagged with a taxi hint so you know when walking isn't practical.
    • Each stop now shows its nearest metro or train station and how far away it is.
    • Popular attractions and restaurants get a short reservation tip — like when to book timed-entry tickets — right on the itinerary.
    • Transit info, reservation tips, and walking times now update automatically whenever your trip changes — add, remove, or reorder places, change your hotel, or adjust the settings and everything refreshes on its own. No refresh button needed.
    • Every stop in your itinerary now has a Directions link that starts from the previous stop — the first stop of a day starts from your hotel if one is set, or from wherever you are right now. Works in the trip planner and on shared trips.
    • Tune walking and transit per trip: set your own maximum walking distance (1–6 km), maximum walking time (15–75 min), and how far to look for a nearby station (500 m–2 km) from the new "Walking & transit" settings menu in the trip planner. Your choices apply to the trip planner and its shared page.

    Trip Planning with AI

    • Paste any itinerary text — even one from ChatGPT — and HappyTrails turns it into a real trip with each stop matched to an actual place on the map.
    • Create a full day-by-day itinerary from just a destination, the number of days, and your interests. The AI drafts it for you in seconds.
    • Review and tweak the draft before saving: edit or remove places, and preview everything on one screen.
    • Import an itinerary into an existing trip — new days are added after your current ones, or you can merge the new places into days you already have.
    • Get a clear heads-up when an itinerary is longer than your trip's remaining dates, plus friendly messages when pasted text can't be understood.
    • The AI dialog now prefills your trip's destination and keeps trip dates in order — no more backwards date ranges.

    Stay in the Loop

    • You can now open this What's New page right from inside the app — tap the sparkles icon in the header on Explore, Trips, or any other screen.
    • The sparkles icon now shows a small orange dot whenever there are updates you haven't seen yet — it clears as soon as you open this page.

    Your Hotel at the Center

    • Tell HappyTrails where you're staying and the AI builds your itinerary around it, so every day starts and ends close to home base.
    • Your stay location is remembered on the trip and can be changed or cleared any time from the trip planner.
    • See each stop's distance from your hotel in the planner and on shared trips, and spot the hotel marker right on the trip map.

    Trips & Sharing

    • View a whole trip's stops on the map with one tap, and copy the full itinerary as text to paste anywhere.
    • The Share option moved into the trip's menu for a cleaner look, and the itinerary is now much easier to browse on your phone.
    • Shared trip pages now include the trip map — hotel marker included — so friends see exactly where everything is.

    Places & Guides

    • A place's detail page now clearly shows which trips it's already saved in, and tapping the badge jumps straight to the right day.
    • Duplicate protection: you can't accidentally add the same place to a trip twice — the app tells you it's already there.
    • Imported places that couldn't be matched to the map show a "Not on map" badge with a one-tap "Find on map" fix to link them to a real place.

    Listening Experience

    • Fixed the silent first-tap Listen issue: while your audio guide is being prepared you'll see "Preparing audio…", and if your browser blocks autoplay you get a ready-to-play button instead of nothing.
    • If audio genuinely fails, you now see a clear error message instead of a button that quietly resets.

    Behind the Scenes

    • Made guide generation more robust when two people open the same new place at the same moment — everyone gets one consistent guide.
